My first born,
Today is your 13th birthday. You came into this world on July 4, 2005 at 3:31 pm. You are now officially a teenager and I couldn’t be prouder. I always thought I would freak out when this day arrived. I thought I would constantly worry about hormones, attitudes and all the physical changes. Some time in the near future I am sure I will worry about all those things and more, but not today. While you are officially as tall as me with strong, broad shoulders and even stronger legs, you are still my baby. Nothing will ever change that. My heart doubled the day you were born and you are my heart outside of my chest. My favorite things about you are also sometimes the things that make me crazy but I wouldn’t want to change one thing about you. (well I wish sometimes you didn’t leave your clothes on the floor).
You came into the world as a force to reckoned and that hasn’t changed. Independence Day is the perfect birthday for you as you are so very independent. You have been since you were 3 months old. You are super smart (way smarter than me), kind, compassionate, witty and oh so handsome. But I’m not biased or anything! My most favorite thing about you is just how laid back and good natured you are. You can be the center of attention or you can sit back and just watch. Never change who are for anyone or anything. When the noise of the world seems too loud just know that it’s just that, noise. Nothing is ever too big and you are never too small. You are so loved…more today than yesterday and less than tomorrow. We are so proud of you and will celebrate you hard all month long.

Every year since he was about 5 we have taken the same patriotic photos. Him alone and of course with his siblings. His favorite color, of course, is red. He is not a fan of photos but lets me take them, we call it the Mommy Tax. Once a year, I put them all in red, white and blue and spend five minutes snapping some photos. Happy birthday to my oldest and happy Independence Day, America. What a fantastic day, every single year.
